Evils of Alcohol

"Absinthe" was a silent film made in 1913 by the Gem Motion Picture Company (later absorbed by Universal Pictures). The movie was made as part of the worldwide temperance movement. Though the poster is bleak and depressing it's also enticing and suggestive. Is this man contemplating suicide? Does the empty bed behind him suggest a broken relationship or is he biding time in a dark and lonely bordello? The atmosphere is heavy and dank with an outer frame resembling a tarot card. This was a tough woodcut but I love the final print. (5" x 7", black ink print)
